The Top Ten (and then some) most bizarre Lubbock Music Moments

(okay, I can't even number these..we've had a lotta weird stuff happen here)

Joe Ely and friends substitute an onion for a missing cue ball at Stubb’s barbeque.  The game is later immortalized in a country and western song.  Ely also gets an honorable mention for the timed release of a pink Cadillac into the river during the Tornado Jam.

Coal Chamber breaks up onstage at the Pavilion (after coming to blows backstage).   Coal Chamber also gets an honorable mention for their debut in Lubbock opening for a Kiss Tribute Band, and their second visit when their bus driver died the night he was supposed to drive them to Lubbock.

After a poorly executed “rock jump” the guitarist for Rossington Collins jumps back up pretending to look cool while his broken guitar neck flops around.

Wayne Static of Static X gets his tooth knocked out on stage.  The accident was initially blamed on fans but was the fault of the bass player.

Davey Jones of the Monkees (yes the little sweet English kid) comes to blows with his manager backstage at the Amphitheater.  They are seen wrestling and rolling around on the grass.

Megadeth find out from a waitress/FMX listener in a Lubbock gentlemans establishment that they’d been thrown off the Aerosmith tour (for trashing the band on Dallas radio).  Jackyl subbed as opener.  It was also the only time in Jackyl’s career that the chainsaw didn’t work; due to the short turnaround, a roadie forgot to gas it up.

Rainbow have to cut a show short due to an overzealous fans beer being thrown into the control board (shorting it out)-Warrant later does cut a concert show due to items being thrown on stage.

Aerosmith’s Joe Perry thinks nothing of removing his pants onstage at the hot Lubbock Colesieum and changing into shorts.

Young d.j. hothead Wes Nessman threatens Paul Stanley with an “ass whuppin’” for not honoring his bands promise to hold a “meet and greet” session for fans.  As I was quickly flanked by security determined to turn the “ass whupping” around, Gene Simmons appears and diffuses the situation by saying, “c’mon Paul, let’s just do it”.

At a later show (2003) Gene Simmons is forced to hold a microphone with his mouth when the stand breaks as being lowered onto the aerial riser.  It looked ridiculous but he probably saved some fans from serious injury.

The Cramps are arrested at the Lubbock Internation Airport (they pissed off the flight crew).

Everlast threatens to cut short his set at the Crawfish festival after being hit in the tooth with an airborne crustasteon.

Britney Spears offers a weak apology and no refunds after shorting out the electricity at the new United Spirit Arena.

The members of Pantera freak out fans with a surprise appearance at the 19th FMX Birthday Bash.  They hung out with Sevendust, jammed with Pumpjack and sang along to April Wine.  (Trust me, it was weird seeing standing next to Dimebag while he sang “Sign of the Gypsy Queen”.

The “pride of Lubbock” Texas, Natalie Maines, pisses of America with her comments about President Bush.
